Dorota Piella, Trainee Deputy Manager

September 5, 2011

How would you describe your role?

I have recently been promoted from General Assistant and am training to be the Deputy Manager at my site, so I am learning all the time.  Currently I’m responsible for ordering, for counting the daily takings, recording invoices, and I also supervise service during lunch and breakfast, making sure that everything is provided at the highest level.

What’s your typical day?

I start by counting the takings from the previous day.  Once this is done and I have prepared the till, I go to the restaurant where I meet all the members of staff for a daily briefing.  I help with service until 10 and then prepare and print menus and record some invoices.  Around 11.30 I go back to the restaurant where I stay until 2.30 helping with the lunch service.  The rest of the afternoon is taken up with office and admin tasks, dealing with queries, and getting organised for the following day.

What is the best part of your job?

I am at the stage of my training where I am learning a lot of new things and I really enjoy this.  I also enjoy meeting the customers and it’s a bonus that I get to work with a team of such nice people.

And the worst part?

I don’t really have a worst part of the day. Maybe it would be a moment where I feel disappointed with myself.

Life before H & J

I came to the UK from Poland and worked as a cleaner whilst trying to improve my English.  I then got a job in a very busy coffee shop with over 3000 people in the building and  worked there for 3 years before coming to Harbour & Jones.

Why H & J?

I was looking for a new challenge with a company that could offer good prospects and the H&J advert looked just right.

Why still H & J?

I’m so happy that my manager Felicity has given me this opportunity for development. I’m enjoying the new challenges and will do my best not to disappoint her.

When you’re not at work?

I like watching movies and just spending time with my friends. I’m also addicted to Skype and love to chat with my family back home in Poland.
